Stroock Litigator Laura Besvinick Wins Prestigious Burton Award for Legal Writing

Miami, March 8, 2018 Stroock litigation partner Laura Besvinick has been awarded a Law360 Distinguished Legal Writing Award by the Burton Awards, a nonprofit program associated with the Library of Congress. Laura’s article “What Lawyers Can Learn from Poker Players” was selected out of nominations submitted by the nation’s top 1,000 largest law firms. In announcing the award, Burton Awards founder William Burton said “the winners are outstanding, highly skilled, and effective writers, and the competition was acutely keen. The Law360 writing award winners have now attained a new and even higher standard of excellence.”

Published in the June 2017 edition of The Corporate Counseler, Laura’s article critiques a well-known point of comparison between chess and litigation. She argues that poker is a more apt comparison because litigators are often making decisions based off of imperfect or limited information. This is the fourth consecutive year that a Stroock lawyer has won this prestigious award.

Based in Stroock’s Miami office, Laura Besvinick is a nationally recognized litigator that represents insurers in bad faith actions, coverage disputes, consumer class actions and other complex cases in state and federal trial and appellate courts.

The award, which is presented by Law360 and the American Bar Association, will be presented at a ceremony at the Library of Congress on May 21, 2018 that will feature a reception, dinner, gala and a performance by stars of the Broadway musical Wicked.

The Burton Awards were established in 1999 to honor the finest accomplishments in law, including writing, reform, public service and interest, regulatory innovation and lifetime achievements in the profession.
