Stroock Guides Lawmakers’ Brief in Supreme Court Abortion Case
New York, NY, December 2, 2019 — A Stroock team led by litigation partner Claude Szyfer assisted in the preparation of a bicameral amicus brief filed today by congressional Democrats in support of a challenge to a Louisiana abortion law before the U.S. Supreme Court.
The brief in June Medical Services LLC v. Gee is signed by 197 members of Congress, led by Speaker Pelosi and Senator Schumer. The lawmakers are supporting June Medical Services’ bid to strike down Louisiana’s Act 620, which requires physicians who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at a local hospital.
“The Supreme Court has made clear that the principles of Roe and Casey are the law of this land, and states cannot unduly burden a woman’s constitutional right to terminate a pre-viability pregnancy,” Szyfer said. “With the passing of laws like Act 620, states are creating a patchwork of laws in which one’s constitutional protections are honored or denied based on where one lives.”
The Stroock team includes Julie Matos, Pamela Takefman and Michele Pahmer.
