Stroock Honored with Immigration Equality’s 2023 Safe Haven Award
March 27, 2023
Press Release
Immigration Equality, the nation's leading LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrant rights organization, named Stroock as a recipient of its 2023 Safe Haven Award, honoring the firm’s commitment to supporting this vulnerable population of asylum seekers this past year. An awards ceremony will be held on May 24th in Manhattan.
Stroock’s national pro bono program, the Public Service Project (PSP), expanded its efforts to protect and combat attacks on LGBTQ and other fundamental human rights in 2022. Its work with Immigration Equality included, among other matters, asylum cases for LGBTQ individuals persecuted in Singapore, Cuba, Nigeria, and Jamaica. Stroock also launched its Name Change Task Force in 2022, building a cross-office initiative to secure gender-identify-affirming legal name changes for transgender individuals as well as name changes for domestic violence survivors, the unhoused, and veterans. Stroock also expanded its Refugee Assistance Task Force last year, helping vulnerable refugees from Afghanistan, Ukraine, and elsewhere secure short- and long-term immigration solutions, including helping to secure asylum for an LGBTQ rights activist who faced persecution in Russia.
Kerry T. Cooperman, Special Counsel and PSP Director, stated: “We are honored and grateful to receive this recognition and proud of our ever-deepening partnership with Immigration Equality, a longtime leader in the fight for justice, dignity, and respect for LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrants who face violence and persecution in their home countries simply for being who they are. Together with the dedicated attorneys and staff at Immigration Equality, Stroock’s immigration team and Refugee Assistance Task Force will continue to work to secure a safe haven and equality for LGBTQ and HIV-positive asylum seekers and their families in 2023 and into the future.”
