Press Release

Stroock & Stroock & Lavan is pleased to announce the firm’s successful pro bono representation of NYC Kids RISE in a groundbreaking public private-community partnership with the City of New York to roll out the Save for College Program across the City’s public schools.

Starting this school year, the Save for College Program will allow kindergarten students enrolled in a New York City public school — including participating charter schools — to automatically receive a scholarship account invested in a NY 529 Direct Plan, with an initial $100 from NYC Kids RISE, unless their families choose not to participate, according to the City of New York.

The firm’s work on this matter included negotiating a multi-year agreement under which the City will provide funding for the expansion and multi-year continuation of the Save for College Program, to be administered by NYC Kids RISE.

“Stroock brought to bear its interdisciplinary strengths in Governmental Affairs, Non-Profit Organizations, Corporate, and Intellectual Property in order to bring this matter to a successful conclusion,” Director of Pro Bono Kerry Cooperman said. “Stroock began working with NYC Kids RISE during the development of its pilot program and has provided support on several mission-critical legal matters, including subcontracting, vendor, and service agreements.”

The Stroock team was helmed by Partner Bradley Kulman, who has provided support to NYC Kids RISE for several years, and included Partner Jeff Mann and Associate Deborah Bernstein.
