The ABI's 40 Under 40

Samantha Martin has been named to the American Bankruptcy Institute’s (ABI) 2021 “40 Under 40” list, which identifies emerging leaders in the insolvency industry who are committed to the highest standards of achievement at work and in their communities.  The ABI chose honorees from a distinguished list of nominees from both large and small law firms across the country, spanning practice areas such as law, academia, finance, government and consulting.

Samantha is a member of Stroock’s Financial Restructuring Group and has significant experience representing debtors, official committees of unsecured creditors and ad hoc groups of bondholders and lenders, among others, in all aspects of complex corporate restructurings.

Samantha’s recent representations include creditor groups in Array Canada, Chaparral Energy, Monitronics (d/b/a Brinks),  JC Penney, and the official committees of unsecured creditors in Global Brands Group, The McClatchy Company, and EP Energy, the last of which was named 2021 “Energy Deal of the Year (over $1B)” by The M&A Advisor.  In addition, Samantha has driven many pro bono cases protecting the educational rights of students with disabilities, helping to secure appropriate school placements after the Department of Education was unable to do so.

Samantha also plays an active role in the restructuring community.  Samantha currently serves as Co-Chair of the Stroock Women's Affinity Group, as Board Advisor for the New York Chapter of the International Women’s Insolvency & Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC NY) and as Communications Manager for the ABI’s Unsecured Trade Creditors Committee.  Samantha also recently served as Co-Chair of the IWIRC NY board, as a member of the Executive Committee for the International Insolvency Institute NextGen Program and as a member of the Red Party Committee for Her Justice.

“The 2021 honorees are a testament to the future of the insolvency profession, with exemplary accomplishments in both their careers and communities,” said ABI Executive Director Amy Quackenboss. “We look forward to this diverse collection of young leaders propelling ABI's full range of activities forward to advance the profession.”

The selection process was highly competitive, with the ABI considering more than 250 candidates for this award.  The honorees were selected by a committee of senior professionals in the restructuring community and will be recognized at ABI's Winter Leadership Conference on December 10 in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
