The late Louis Lefkowitz, a former New York attorney general, would be surprised to hear statewide candidates this year advocating an expanded prosecutorial role for his office.

In the mid-1970s, Lefkowitz eagerly relinquished power over election and campaign finance law violations. Supporting a new bipartisan Board of Elections for that purpose, he believed the transfer of authority would inoculate him from partisan criticism.
