Press Release
New York, New York - At an ceremony last night, Stroock Special Counsel Debra R. Sapp was among institutions and individuals receiving the 2022 Cornerstone Award from Lawyers Alliance for New York ("LANY"). Selected from more than 2,000 business and transactional lawyers who volunteered through LANY during the past year, Debra was recognized for negotiating on behalf of shelters serving vulnerable New Yorkers.
For the past five years, Debra has helped these nonprofits effectively negotiate and document relationships among government agencies and local landlords. She worked with Highland Park Community Development Corporation to negotiate leases for two shelters for families with children and to obtain approval of those leases from the government funder.
Also with her assistance, Urban Pathways successfully negotiated a lease for a transitional housing facility and another lease for a new drop-in center to provide services to chronically homeless single adults.
“Debra is highly skilled, organized, efficient, and an excellent negotiator. She focuses in on the key issues and explains them effectively. Because of Debra’s work we were able to expeditiously negotiate complex commercial leases that included buildouts for our new programs. These programs will allow hundreds of New Yorkers to come off the streets and out of the cold this winter, and in the years to come.” — Mark Hurwitz Chief Operating Officer, Urban Pathways
Debra joins Alan Klinger, , Stroock’s Co-Managing Partner and Chair of its Government Affairs and Regulatory Support Group, who received this award in 2007 and Partner Bradley Kulman who was acknowledged by LANY in 2004.
Stroock’s Public Service Project continues the firm’s longtime commitment to serving the public interest. With the primary focus on providing legal assistance to underserved and under-resourced communities, the PSP practice offers a multidisciplinary approach to delivering comprehensive legal services.
