“New IRS Form 990 Requirements Become Effective for Reports Due in 2009”
In 2008, the IRS adopted a revised and greatly expanded version of Form 990 (Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax), the annual reporting form for public charities, social welfare organizations, business leagues, trade associations and certain other nonprofits. A draft of the revised form was first released in December 2007. Final instructions for the form and additional background documents were issued on August 19, 2008. The IRS released the Form 990 and Form 990-EZ (a simpler form for smaller nonprofits) for fiscal 2008 in December 2008. The Form 990-PF, used by private foundations, was not revised.
