Stroock’s Joel Cohen Appointed A Member of The New York State Commission On Judicial Conduct
Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP announced that litigation partner Joel Cohen has been appointed as a member of the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct.
The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct is the state agency responsible for investigating complaints of misconduct against judges of the state unified court system and, where appropriate, determining to admonish, censure or remove from office those judges found to have engaged in unethical behavior. All determinations are subject to review in the Court of Appeals, New York State’s highest court. There are 11 members of the Commission. Four are appointed by the Governor, three by the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals, and one by each of the four leaders of the State Legislature.
Mr. Cohen was formerly with the New York State Special Prosecutor’s Office and was an Assistant Attorney-in-Charge with the U.S. Justice Department’s Organized Crime & Racketeering Section (E.D.N.Y.). Since arriving at Stroock in 1985, Mr. Cohen has represented and actively counseled individuals and corporations that have been investigated and/or prosecuted for alleged federal racketeering, securities violations, tax evasion, bribery, fraud, corruption, obstruction of justice, money laundering, environmental offenses, and customs violations involving alleged international frauds. He has also represented attorneys on ethical issues and in disciplinary proceedings in a number of jurisdictions in the New York area.
Mr. Cohen authors columns on professional responsibility and ethics for the New York Law Journal and law.com, and is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Fordham Law School where he teaches Professional Responsibility.
Mr. Cohen’s newest book, Truth Be Veiled: A Justin Steele Murder Case, has recently been published by Coffetown Press. Co-authored with award-winning legal journalist Carla T. Main, Truth Be Veiled is an examination of legal ethics that explores a murder trial and the relationship between attorney and client. It is available on Amazon.com and the Amazon Kindle.
