Stroock Announces Selection of New Co-Managing Partner
Longtime Co-Managing Partner Stuart Coleman to be succeeded by Jeff Keitelman, Co-Chair of National Real Estate Practice and Co-MP of D.C. Office; Alan Klinger, Co-Chair of National Litigation Practice, to continue alongside Keitelman.
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, DC (September 20, 2016) – In a major leadership transition, Stroock & Stroock & Lavan LLP announced that longtime Co-Managing Partner Stuart H. Coleman will be stepping down from that role. Mr. Coleman, a Stroock corporate attorney since 1979 who represents many of the country’s leading mutual funds and investment advisers, has held his management position since 2004. He will continue to serve as the leader of Stroock’s industry-leading Investment Management group and a member of the firm’s Executive Committee.
Succeeding Mr. Coleman is Jeffrey R. Keitelman, Co-Chair of Stroock’s National Real Estate Practice and Co-Managing Partner of the firm’s Washington, DC office. Mr. Keitelman joins New York Litigation Practice Co-Chair Alan M. Klinger, who has served as Stroock’s Co-Managing Partner since 2007.
“Transitions are not always easy, but the time seemed right to relinquish my seat as Co-Managing Partner and enjoy the next phase of my career at Stroock and beyond,” Mr. Coleman said. “Naturally you feel proprietary about a firm where you’ve worked your entire career – in my case, 37 years – and I am comforted seeing Jeff step up as the new co-leader at Stroock, especially alongside Alan, a true veteran manager. In his short time here, Jeff has made a substantial mark in co-chairing our national real estate group and overseeing our growing D.C office, but more importantly in the way he has connected with attorneys and staff across all corners of the firm as a colleague, mentor and role model.”
Mr. Keitelman joined Stroock in 2015 and immediately was named a member of the firm’s Executive Committee. An experienced deal advisor, he has been lead lawyer in numerous high-profile commercial real estate transactions across the country. That includes his prior representation, for almost a dozen years, of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in all real estate aspects of its redevelopment of the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. He also advises a number of foreign and domestic real estate investors, Fortune 500 companies and major government agencies in some of their largest real estate transactions.
Mr. Keitelman has consistently been recognized as best-in-class by Chambers, Legal 500, America’s Leading Lawyers and other legal directories, and has regularly been named a Top Lawyer in Washington by Washingtonian magazine. In selecting him as an MVP lawyer for real estate, Law 360 cited his ability to understand “the client’s business and…the circumstances of the deal, while at the same time having a big-picture mentality.”
“I am honored by the trust and confidence my partners have placed in me as their next Co-Managing Partner in succession to Stuart Coleman, who has been an outstanding leader for nearly two decades,” Mr. Keitelman said.
“Stroock is a leading law firm with a distinguished reputation in financial restructuring, real estate, investment management, corporate transactions, litigation and many other areas, and I am enthusiastic about upholding its legacy. This is an exciting time for Stroock and I look forward to working with Alan and numerous others to help steer us to new levels of success in the years ahead.”
Mr. Klinger commented on the succession change: “On behalf of the partnership and the entire firm I extend thanks to Stuart Coleman for his leadership these past two decades,” Mr. Klinger said. “Irreplaceable is a risky description to apply to anyone, but certainly Stuart is one-of-a-kind. Our firm’s financial health and professional excellence are a reflection of his dedication to Stroock. We’re pleased he will continue to serve on the Executive Committee and oversee one of our marquee practices to the benefit of our many clients in the investment management community.”
Kristopher M. Hansen, Chair of the firm’s nationally renowned Financial Restructuring Group and member of the Executive Committee, commented on the choice of Mr. Keitelman as incoming Co-Managing Partner: “From his arrival more than a year and a half ago, Jeff demonstrated that he had the skill set, strategic vision and presence to qualify as a next-generation leader of the firm. With our historic foundation and so many market-leading practices, we see numerous pathways to further growth and expansion for Stroock. Jeff is the right choice for charting that course.”
Outside his practice, Mr. Keitelman has been active in civic and charitable work and has been given numerous awards along the way, including a Lifelong Champion Award for philanthropy, service and volunteerism by Greater DC Cares, Inc.
He earned his J.D. in 1986 from Columbia University Law School and his B.A. magna cum laude from Brown University in 1982.
