Tom Firestone, Stroock partner and former Resident Legal Adviser at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, appeared on MSNBC with Andrea Mitchell to discuss the Russian court’s denial of Brittney Griner’s appeal and the political actions the U.S. can take to negotiate her release, as well as other American prisoners.
“These kinds of negotiation exchanges are difficult, even in good political conditions, they're especially difficult now. And it could be that the Russians are expecting more oligarchs, people close to Putin, to be arrested for sanctions evasion or for something else. And they may want to hold back as many Americans as they can as potential bargaining chips. So the political situation definitely makes a difficult task even more difficult.”
