About The Correctional Association of New York
The Correctional Association of New York has for 175 years been the only independent organization in New York with authority under state law to monitor prisons and report findings to the legislature and the broader public. Since 1846, CANY has been granted special authority by the Legislature to monitor prison conditions and report findings to the public and policymakers. It has the power to visit and inspect all state correctional facilities, converse publicly or confidentially with inmates and staff, and examine all physical and electronic records (the latter privilege was removed in 1973 and restored in 2020).
