Stroock Attorneys and Human Rights First to Win Political Asylum Case
December 16, 2022
Press Release
In partnership with Human Rights First, Stroock Associates Sarah M. DellaCrosse and Ida Phair and Paralegal Melissa Seawright, secured a pro bono victory on behalf of a young Russian family seeking political asylum in the United States.
While living in Russia, the family—a mother, father, and their young child—lived in constant fear of arrest and imprisonment because of their public protests of the Putin regime and support for an opposing political party. On several occasions, Russian government officials illegally searched their home, threatening to place their young daughter in an orphanage.
Stroock began representing the family in April 2020, shortly after their arrival in the United States. The team filed an asylum application, including a comprehensive briefing and hundreds of pages of supporting documentation, and waited over two years for an asylum hearing. At a hearing on December 15, 2022, the immigration judge granted the family’s asylum application from the bench.
Through the Stroock's Public Service Project, the family will be assisted in securing work authorization renewals and access to more permanent housing.
