Press Release
New York, New York - Debra Sapp has been awarded the 2022 Cornerstone Award from Lawyers Alliance for New York ("LANY"), recognizing her extraordinary contributions in pro bono legal services.
Debra's work with LANY allowed her to continue her expertise in commercial leasing, working with a number of small businesses and organizations based in the Brooklyn community where she lived. “Knowing that I’m involved and participating in my community makes the work feel very tangible. Small businesses have such a role to play in a city like New York where there are big and small businesses right next door to each other. Helping a business owner open a small business that thrives in the shadow of the Barclays Center puts into perspective how we can help.”
Pro bono work has always been a strong focus for Debra. By treating pro bono assignments like “regular” work, she's able to prioritize time for these types of matters. "Stroock has been really supportive of me focusing a good amount of time on pro bono clients. Providing a small business with big law representation helps level the playing field for businesses and I feel strongly that lawyers can help by simply sharing our resources. The issues and concerns that small businesses experience are similar to the bigger clients, or even magnified, because every risk that we help a small business avoid is money that is directly going into a small business owner’s own pocket.”
Stroock has a long history of serving underserved and under-resourced communities in New York City. Launched in 2001, the Public Service Project (PSP) continues Stroock’s longtime commitment to serving individuals and communities who are denied access to justice and equal opportunity. Alan Klinger, Stroock’s Co-Managing Partner and Chair of its Government Affairs and Regulatory Support Group, also received this award for outstanding pro bono legal service for his work on behalf of children in 2007.
The 2022 Cornerstone Award ceremony will take place Thursday, November 17, 2022 from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM ET in New York City.
