Stroock and its lawyers have been shortlisted for five Diversity & Inclusion Awards from Chambers USA this year. In this article, we profile the firm’s wellness program, a finalist for “Outstanding Diversity & Inclusion Program.” Click here to see our other finalists.
Stroock’s Health & Wellness Affinity Group has long helped the firm stay ahead of the curve when it comes to bolstering the well-being of our lawyers and staff.
Dating back almost a decade, the group is now one of the few that’s open to staff as well as lawyers, providing an industry-standard level of programming and other resources to improve their well-being.
“The Health & Wellness Group instills a sense of community and leveling out among people in different positions of authority at the firm,” said associate Natalie Birnbaum, one of the group’s co-chairs. “It’s nice to feel that layer of support — to feel open communication with our members.”
A Focus on Balance
The affinity group helps lawyers and staff develop techniques to ensure that their professional obligations and physical and emotional health remain in balance.
Through lunch-and-learn seminars and other informal and formal gatherings, the group explores techniques to remain productive and healthy.
In particular, the affinity group’s current activities include:
- Yoga and meditation offered on alternating weeks to all lawyers and staff. Meditation is led by a professional teacher the firm brings in for the recurring program. Yoga is hosted at a nearby studio, and breakfast follows at the firm.
- Soul Cycle offered monthly to all lawyers and staff. Founded in New York, the exercise program is growing into a national phenomenon. Soul Cycle combines high-intensity interval training, muscle sculpting and choreography. Classes take place in candlelit studios and are accompanied by unique playlists.
- Healthy eating education and utilizing organic, vegetable-based options at many firm events.
- Education and outreach regarding our firm’s robust mental health and substance abuse assistance, which is available to all lawyers and staff.
Aside from this affinity group, Stroock’s employees have access to 24-hour, free confidential assessment, information, referral and crisis-intervention services through an Employee Assistance Program.
The firm also offers back-up child care to all lawyers and staff through Bright Horizons, which operates a number of daycare centers in the vicinity of Stroock’s offices.
Additionally, Stroock hosts an annual health fair, which brings lawyers and staff together with a number of local doctors, dentists and businesses that offer health care and nutrition services.
And the firm is actively working to expand these offerings.
Stroock’s newly formed Stroock Community Team now hosts well-attended get-togethers several times each month to promote informal, face-to-face interaction for all lawyers and staff, while encouraging a break from the daily pressures of a law practice.
The events include holiday-themed observances, various trivia contests and other giveaways, sports-related parties and practice group happy hours.
