Professional Development

Assignments
Although associates in all our offices are hired for a particular practice group, they have ongoing opportunities to engage in multidisciplinary work via the assignment process.  In each practice group, the administrative partners use our departmental benchmarks as a guide to assign work to associates, helping to ensure individual career development through a broad range of opportunities and experiences. Typically, junior associates work directly with the partner in charge of a matter, along with a mid-level or senior associate.  At an early stage, Stroock associates take on significant responsibility, often dealing directly with clients and, depending on the practice area, conducting depositions and discovery, appearing before courts and agencies, helping to develop and structure transactions, and negotiating transaction documents.

Continuing Legal Education
Stroock is committed to furthering the career and professional development of our associates.  We provide comprehensive firm-wide continuing legal education programming (“CLE”), with course offerings for both new attorneys and experienced practitioners. In addition to firm-wide and practice-specific training sessions conducted internally by partners and prominent industry experts, our lawyers have unlimited access to live programming and on demand  CLE content offered by providers such as PLI and the New York City Bar. Attendance by associates and partners at CLE programs presented by local Bar Associations and professional or industry-specific organizations is both encouraged and sponsored by the Firm.  Stroock is an Accredited CLE Provider in both California and New York.

Core Skill Development
Stroock’s Departmental Benchmark Initiative includes workshops and training programs that support the enhancement of core skills that are central to an attorney’s career development.  Among these are offerings in critical skill areas such as communications, building client relationships, supervising, managing and delegating, and business development.

Basic Lawyering Program
In New York, new associates participate in our Basic Lawyering Program, which provides training and fundamental skill development.  Our program opens with  a week-long, intensive orientation covering topics such as professional responsibility, communication skills, economics of a law firm, transitioning from law student to law firm associate and client service basics.  Each department sponsors specific training programs, which associates regularly attend during the first two years of their practice.  In addition, associates are encouraged to supplement this mandatory training by attending programming open to all our lawyers.

Mentoring
Stroock supports mentoring as a way for our associates to integrate into the Firm and progress professionally.  First and second year associates and junior level laterals are paired with two mentors – a mid-level associate and a partner – who offer guidance on day-to-day issues and longer-range career goals. Unique to Stroock, our associates are involved in choosing their mentors. This enables associates to pair with attorneys who can best assist them in their professional and career development. We also work with outside consultants, who provide mentees and mentors with ideas about how both can maximize their relationship, and mutually benefit from the experience.
